Marple Newtown Student Athletes Recognized by The Adam Taliaferro Foundation!

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Mr. Chris Gicking, MNHS Athletic Director, Mrs. Julie Rufo, Assistant Athletic Director, and Mr. Christian Jaspersen, MNHS Assistant Principal, accompanied three senior student athletes being recognized for their service to the high school and surrounding community through the Adam Taliaferro Foundation. Shannon McCarthy, Anthony Paoletti, and Kristen Rutecki attended the luncheon as guests with many of their peers from high schools throughout the Delaware Valley. Following the luncheon, Adam Taliaferro, a former Penn State University defensive standout who was diagnosed with a paralyzing spinal cord injury following a tackle in a game at Ohio State in 2000, provided remarks relative to his journey to overcome an initial medical determination he would never walk again. Also, Adam provided insight into the manner in which the experience contributed to the mission of his foundation: Lending a helping hand to individuals who have suffered life-altering spinal injuries. Following Adam’s heroic story, our students were able to tour Lincoln Financial Field, including the players’ locker room and media center. The tour culminated into an opportunity for students to “walk down the tunnel” to the stadium field itself and spend time basking in the glory of being a Super Bowl Champion.

Academic Calendar 2018-2019

Our Academic Calendar for School Year 2018-2019 is on the website (under the header ‘News, Events and Calendar’). It was recommended by district administration and approved last evening at the Regular Board Meeting.

You will notice that the calendar has 183 school days for all students K-12.  Our make-up days are listed in the lower left corner.  It is our intention to use these make-up days in the order listed on the calendar as school closures occur, barring any unanticipated considerations.

The district also has adopted a modified spring break schedule for next year.  After careful consideration, administration recommended this calendar version, which includes a shorter spring break and an earlier year end, because it has several benefits.  These benefits include allowing for more meaningful instructional time and more flexibility in scheduling of PSSA’s, with the goal of improving student achievement and reducing student stress relating to testing.

For example, the calendar allows the district to utilize the days before and after Spring Break for testing, giving the students a rest between testing sessions, and therefore a less stressful testing schedule. Please note that the testing schedule is specific to the individual school as long as it falls within the window from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
