A Message from Dr. Cary- Death of Andrew Shelly

Dear Parents, Staff, and Community Members,

It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you of the tragic death of Andrew Shelly, Marple Newtown graduate Class of 2015, who was killed in a car accident on August 12. Andrew’s death touches so many in our community and we want to extend our support and condolences to all who are grieving.

Counseling services are available for students and staff at our high school at 9:00 AM on Monday, August 14, 2017. We will honor Andrew with a moment of silence at the beginning of the school year at our high school.

We cherish each one of our students and graduates and are deeply saddened by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are offered to the Shelly family; Michael (a senior), Amanda, and Andrew’s parents, Melissa and Mike.

2017 - 2018 School Supply Lists
New PA Immunization Regulations as of August 1, 2017

Parents will have a much shorter time to provide proof of immunization due to these new regulations.  Previously, families had 8 months to provide proof of immunization to the school.  The regulations require most proof of immunization to be provided on or before the first day of school or risk their child’s exclusion from school.  The goal is to ensure that children in school are adequately protected from preventable diseases.

Children in ALL grades (K-12) need the following immunizations for attendance:

  • 4 doses of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis
  • 4 doses of polio (4th dose on or after 4th birthday AND at least 6 months after previous dose
  • 2 doses of measles, mumps, rubella
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B
  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity

7th grade ADDITIONAL requirements:

  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap)
  • 1 dose meningococcal vaccine (MCV)

12th grade ADDITIONAL requirements:

  • 2nd dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)  If the first dose was given at 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required.

Exemptions to school law for immunizations:

  • Medical reasons
  • Religious beliefs
  • Philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction

If a child is exempt, he or she may be removed from school during an outbreak/health emergency

Additional information regarding immunization requirements may be found by visiting the PA Department of Health website at www.health.pa.gov.
