Elementary Curriculum Guide
The Marple Newtown School District is committed to providing academic rigor through a comprehensive curriculum. This guide was developed to give you a brief overview of the curriculum for grades K-5. The elementary curriculum reflects the District’s high expectations for each student, and incorporates the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. Curriculum development is a crucial component of the educational process as we prepare students to think critically and creatively.
This guide will provide you with information on Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, FLES, Art, Music, and Health and Physical Education. A more comprehensive curriculum guide is available for review upon request to your child’s principal. We hope that the information provided gives you an understanding of the breadth of content that is taught at the elementary level.
A copy of the complete guide, in pdf format, is available for download here.

Language Arts Curriculum K-5
The Language Arts curriculum in Marple Newtown School District challenges students to read, write, listen, speak, and use technology effectively in order to communicate with others. The program is based upon thematic units that integrate learning across subject areas while providing for differentiation of instruction based upon individual learning differences. Following the guidelines of the PA Literacy Framework 2001, the PA Academic Standards are addressed through five critical literacy experiences: Transacting with Texts, Composing Texts, Extending Reading and Writing, Investigating Language, and Learning to Learn. These critical experiences provide a balance of content knowledge and process design. Students who achieve competence in the Language Arts curriculum will be able to negotiate written, visual, auditory, and hyper texts in a culturally diverse society.
