To Guide the work of schools in helping every child succeed in meeting state standards, the State Board of Education requires that each school district develop a six year strategic plan. Marple Newtown School District began development of this plan in September 2007. The plan must be approved by the school board during the spring of 2008 and submitted to and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education by September 30, 2008. The plan must show in detail how the school district intends to incorporate state standards into the curriculum. Further, the process used to develop the strategic plan must include broad community involvement reflecting the community’s diversity.
Marple Newtown School District invited parents, community leaders, business leaders, students, educators and school officials to participate in the strategic planning process. Through the strategic planning process our district will design a course of action which will provide adequate and appropriate consideration to the educational needs of every student in the district.
Chapter 4 Academic Assessment and Standards Regulations provide that the strategic plan include the following components:
- A mission statement
- A listing of educational and organizational goals related to student achievement and graduation
- A description of the academic standards
- The planned instruction and the instructional and assessment practices
- An assessment plan designed to determine the extent to which students are achieving the academic standards
- A plan for improving student achievement
- A professional education plan
- A description of the school’s organization and organizational goals
- A description of the professional personnel and facilities that will be devoted to attainment of the academic standards
- A description of the strategic planning process and a list of the persons involved
- A remediation plan for students performing at less than the proficient level as defined on the PSSA
- A list of the graduation requirements
- The plan shall be based on an analysis of internal and external needs leading to the specification of priorities for action and action plans
- Approval of the school board and the Superintendent
