IMPORTANT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION UPDATED 2:00PM

IMPORTANT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Updated @ 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 5

Dear MNSD Families,

We are continuing to work through a few outstanding issues with regard to the bus schedules, specifically, adjusting the arrival and drop-off times of each student.  However, due to the BMW Invitational Golf Tournament at Aronimink Golf Club, traffic detours and volume have imposed a significant burden on our ability to establish accurate drop-off times the first week of school.  While we have reached an agreement allowing our buses to access roads that are closed to the public, the issue remains that there is significant volume on surrounding roadways. This heavy traffic is causing our busses to be delayed as they commute from other schools and bus stops.  Unfortunately, we anticipate this situation will likely worsen when the tournament begins play on September 6...

Summer Reading Lists 2018

Dear MNSD Families-

The purpose of summer reading this year is to promote student choice. In an effort to support our students’ development of critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, students must be given the opportunity to take ownership of their reading choices. There are suggested titles that provide choice, as well as, opportunity for exposure to interact with texts that will assist in developing their understanding, perspective, and appreciation for the people, places, and ideas that comprise their world.

The MNHS link provides both required titles and the opportunity for choice. Please note that this list also contains titles for all content areas and the related assignments.

The PHMS links include the rubrics which will be used to score the summer reading assignments so students can use them as a guide for completion.

Academic Calendar 2018-2019

Our Academic Calendar for School Year 2018-2019 is on the website (under the header ‘News, Events and Calendar’). It was recommended by district administration and approved last evening at the Regular Board Meeting.

You will notice that the calendar has 183 school days for all students K-12.  Our make-up days are listed in the lower left corner.  It is our intention to use these make-up days in the order listed on the calendar as school closures occur, barring any unanticipated considerations.

The district also has adopted a modified spring break schedule for next year.  After careful consideration, administration recommended this calendar version, which includes a shorter spring break and an earlier year end, because it has several benefits.  These benefits include allowing for more meaningful instructional time and more flexibility in scheduling of PSSA’s, with the goal of improving student achievement and reducing student stress relating to testing.

For example, the calendar allows the district to utilize the days before and after Spring Break for testing, giving the students a rest between testing sessions, and therefore a less stressful testing schedule. Please note that the testing schedule is specific to the individual school as long as it falls within the window from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

An Important Message from Dr. Cary

Very recently, some information has appeared on social media concerning highly disturbing communications and on-line posts apparently made by a now-deceased resident of Hazelton, PA to randomly-targeted and innocent school students and their families throughout the United States, including two families within our District.  This now-deceased Hazelton resident has no other connection with our District.

At the recommendation of the Executive Director of our Delaware County Intermediate Unit, we are sharing with you updated information that she received yesterday afternoon from the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office....

MNSD Email Communications

The Marple Newtown School District employs multiple methods of technology to communicate with its students, families, and community members.  Email has proven to be a highly effective and efficient form of communication for the district however, it has come to our attention that not all our email communications have been received.  This is most likely due to the safeguards that your internet and or email provider has put into place specifically, Anti-SPAM filters.

To ensure the proper and timely delivery of district email messages, we are asking that you “whitelist” or “allow” the mnsd.org domain and donotreply@mnsd.org email address in your email account.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter and helping us serve our community.

Dear Parents, Students, and Community,

Please join me in congratulating Mr. John Beltrante as the new principal of Marple Newtown High School effective July 1, 2018. Mr. Beltrante admirably served in this district for the past twenty-two years.

While at Worrall he received the Keystone Award for Academic Excellence, The Snag in the River Award, and The Title I Distinguished School Award. In 2013, he was part of the Governor’s Award for Marple Newtown High School.

Mr. Beltrante brings not only experience, but a Master’s in Education from Eastern College and a Principal Certification from Immaculata University.  He is very active in the community as a coach, mentor, and father of two sons, Bryce and Austin.

Message from Dr. Cary

March 19, 2018

Dear Parents and Students,

It will be spring in just a few days! The winter will soon be behind us and we can look forward to warmer days ahead. Over the last few months while I was recuperating, I heard of the many good things happening in the district and I was so pleased.

I’d like to thank the School Board, Mr. Joe Driscoll, the cabinet, administrators, teachers, and staff for their efforts during my absence.

I’d like to thank our students for making us proud each day. I was especially proud of our high school students on the day of the Walk for our Lives event.

I wish you a warm spring recess and joyful holidays.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carol Cary

Make-up Days during Spring Break

Dear Marple Newtown Families,

I know that this winter has been difficult for both families and school operations.

As we continue through the month of March, the district must reassess the academic calendar.  Meeting student instructional days is a priority. As indicated on the school calendar, days over spring break will be used for make-up days.

To meet the required 180 days of school set by the state, our schools will be in session on Monday, March 26, Tuesday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 28, 2018. If there are additional school closures, the district will reevaluate the school calendar at that time.

Having the additional days of instruction prior to the PSSA testing is a benefit for students.  We know that this change may effect prior plans for families.  If your child or children will be absent during those three days, please speak with your child’s principal.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.

Regards,

Joseph Driscoll
Substitute Superintendent

Her current project involves The Paws Healing Heroes Program which was established in 2016 by The Griffin Gives Foundation.  The mission of Paws Healing Heroes is to raise money, through community events and donations and provide service dogs, primarily those in shelters, to Veterans in need. What a terrific way to support our veterans and help our dogs in making their way out of shelters!

Congratulations, Dr. Kane!

9/29/2017 UPDATE REGARDING 9th GRADE BOYS SOCCER PLAYER’S RIGHT TO WEAR APPROPRIATE RELIGIOUS HEADWEAR

On Tuesday afternoon (09.26.17), our District’s 9th grade boys soccer team played an away match against Conestoga High School.   One of our students on this team wears religious headwear in observation of his Sikh faith.

Early in the match, the PIAA referee assigned by PIAA to officiate the match informed our student that he was not permitted to wear his headwear while playing.

Our team’s soccer coach, Mike Snow, responded to the referee that our student wore his headwear for religious purposes.

Nevertheless, the referee indicated that our student needed to remove his headwear, and if he refused to do so, our student would not be permitted to play in the match.

Coach Snow vociferously objected to the referee’s ruling regarding our student’s headwear.  Despite Coach Snow’s strenuous advocacy for the right of our student to appropriately wear religious headwear, the referee did not reverse his ruling. Therefore, our student was relegated to the sidelines for the match.

Coach Snow immediately telephoned Athletic Director Chris Gicking to alert him to this issue.  AD Gicking immediately and strenuously advocated for our student, including with his contact at PIAA, in an effort to permit our student to play in this match.  AD Gicking also communicated with the opposing team’s athletic director and his assistant, who joined with our District in strong agreement that our student should be permitted to play in the match while wearing his religious headwear.  Unfortunately, AD Gicking’s efforts were to no avail, and therefore our student remained relegated to the sidelines for the remainder of the match.

A Message from The Marple Newtown Transportation Department

August 25, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you that our transportation department is implementing a new, web-based, state-of-the-art transportation system, Trans Finder, for School Year 2017-2018. By this time, you should have received your students’ bus information.

Perhaps you’ve noticed changes from last year such as, bus stop location, bus number, driver, etc. These changes are to be expected as a result of our new, more efficient system.

Should you find that the information you received in incorrect (for example, transporting to wrong school), please call the Transportation Office at 610-359-4299. The transportation staff members will either handle your situation within 24 hours or will ask you to email a Request for Review to kkane@mnsd.org. Please put REQUEST FOR REVIEW in the subject line of your email.  Requests for Review will be settled within the first two weeks of school.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we open our new school year with Trans Finder.

2017 - 2018 School Supply Lists
New PA Immunization Regulations as of August 1, 2017

Parents will have a much shorter time to provide proof of immunization due to these new regulations.  Previously, families had 8 months to provide proof of immunization to the school.  The regulations require most proof of immunization to be provided on or before the first day of school or risk their child’s exclusion from school.  The goal is to ensure that children in school are adequately protected from preventable diseases.

Children in ALL grades (K-12) need the following immunizations for attendance:

  • 4 doses of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis
  • 4 doses of polio (4th dose on or after 4th birthday AND at least 6 months after previous dose
  • 2 doses of measles, mumps, rubella
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B
  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity

7th grade ADDITIONAL requirements:

  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap)
  • 1 dose meningococcal vaccine (MCV)

12th grade ADDITIONAL requirements:

  • 2nd dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)  If the first dose was given at 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required.

Exemptions to school law for immunizations:

  • Medical reasons
  • Religious beliefs
  • Philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction

If a child is exempt, he or she may be removed from school during an outbreak/health emergency

Additional information regarding immunization requirements may be found by visiting the PA Department of Health website at www.health.pa.gov.

SPP Scores Released Today

Dear Parents/Guardians/Community Stakeholders,

Today, October 13, 2016, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) released the 2016 School Performance Profiles (SPP). With the exception of our high school, our schools did not have an SPP score last year.

This year, 2016, reflects the first SPP scores of students using the rigorous PA Core Standards. The SPP uses a formula that is heavily dependent on standardized test scores. Pennsylvania aligned its standardized testing system to the more rigorous PA Core Standards and while the performance is still in transition, it is trending in the right direction.

Our schools remain strong in academic achievement and by next year we expect the achievement to be more fully apparent when tied to the SPP score. SPP scores can be viewed by visiting http://paschoolperformance.org/. Please contact your child’s principal if you wish further information about the SPP.

Thank you,
Dr. Cary

Important Message From Dr. Cary

To the Parents/Guardians of Marple Newtown School District Students

Our district administrators became aware of an alleged “creepy clown” incident that may have taken place during the football game on Friday, October 7th. The Newtown Township police who were on site for the game were made aware of the concern at that time. We have no knowledge about the identity of any alleged perpetrator. If you have any information about this alleged incident, please immediately report it to the Newtown Township Police Department.

Because the safety and security of our school community are of paramount concern, we ask that our parents and guardians partner with us in assuring that our students clearly understand that our District does not tolerate incidents of this kind.  They are not funny pranks. Instead, they can terrorize our children and expose the perpetrators themselves to the risk of serious harm.  Our District will hold any student perpetrator within our jurisdiction properly accountable in accordance with this serious level of infraction.

Red Ribbon Week

Culbertson Elementary School will join with other schools and organizations across Pennsylvania and the nation to observe Red Ribbon Week during the week of October 17th to 21st.  The purpose the Red Ribbon Campaign is to encourage people to make a personal and public commitment to drug-free living, to promote healthy lifestyle choices, and to support ongoing community-wide prevention projects.

Telephone Outage

Our telephone service provider experienced a nationwide outage that resulted in the district's telephones not being responsive.  Service has been restored as of 11:59AM today, October 4th.  We are monitoring the issue to make sure that it is stable and remains up and running.  Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this issue.

Superintendent’s Welcome Back Message to Students and Parents

Dear Students and Parents,

As we begin School Year 2016-2017, we share our K-12 vision for a district united by its mascot, colors, vision, and community spirit. We mark this new school year by all schools using the tiger mascot and all schools using the district colors of orange and black (with white and grey as accent colors). While we know each school has its own culture and unique tradition, and we do not want to lose that, we also know that our students need to be part of a K-12 process that begins with students entering the district in kindergarten or first grade and staying with us through high school graduation...

Message from Dr. Cary regarding PSSA/Keystone

Dear Parents,

This week begins our journey through the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). We begin with the PSSA and end with the Keystone Exams in May. The assessment was developed to reflect the PA Core Standards which were adopted in 2013. The PA Core Standards are more rigorous than those that had been previously adopted in Pennsylvania. The PA Core Standards challenge students to think deeply about their learning and require a level of knowledge and skill needed for students to be successful beyond the K-12 years.

Website Maintenance

Our web hosting provider will be performing their weekly planned maintenance on their servers Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 starting at 10PM. During this time, the district website and its schools will be unavailable.

Congratulations Beneshia Mathew

Marple Newtown High School junior, Beneshia Mathew, has been invited to represent MNHS to participate in the Chemistry Olympiad National Examination at LaSalle University on April 23, 2016.

More than 1,000 students sit for the 3-part National Exam each April. Coordinators nominate students for the National Exam based on the results of the Local Competitions.  No more than two students from any given school can compete in the National Exam.  The 20 top-scoring students are invited to attend a study camp to compete for a spot on the U.S. team.  Good luck Beneshia!

MNSD Press Release - October 27, 2015

MARPLE NEWTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDES UPDATE REGARDING ONGOING TEACHER CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

The Marple Newtown School District has been negotiating a successor labor agreement with its teacher’s union (“MNEA”) since January 9, 2015.  The District takes this bargaining process very seriously, including most recently by releasing union representatives from their work day on October 12, 2015 in order to focus a full day toward reaching a settlement.  Members of the District’s bargaining team with full authority to recommend an agreement for Board approval have attended each bargaining session and have worked – both during and in between bargaining sessions – to incorporate aspects of the union’s requests into the district’s proposals.  The District has carefully reviewed market conditions and its own internal and community needs, and offered MNEA a comprehensive compensation package that raises starting salaries and includes salary increases for current teachers that far exceed the current cost of living increase.  The District greatly appreciates the work that our teachers do, and will continue to work in good faith to reach a settlement that is fair to all parties affected.

Snow Make Up Days Approved

At last night’s meeting of the Board of School Directors, the Board approved three days over Spring Break, April 14, 15 and 16, as snow make up days for K-12.  They also approved the use of two Saturday mornings later in the school year for seniors (dates to be determined with the HS Administration).  There were no snow days in the calendar for seniors, as they graduate earlier in June.  Families with planned vacations over spring break will be able to send a note describing the plans for an excused absence for their children.

Sincerely, Merle Horowitz, Ed.D.
